Jakarta 2017: All-New Mazda CX-5 Launched In Indonesia

At today’s opening of the 2017 GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) in Jakarta, PT Eurokars Motor Indonesia (EMI), the distributor of Mazda vehicles in Indonesia, have launched the second generation all-new Mazda CX-5.

The Indonesian market CX-5 comes in two variants – GT and Elite, both powered by a 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G naturally aspirated petrol engine paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission driving just the front wheels. There are no all-wheel drive variant on offer.

Priced between IDR 526,800,000 (for the base GT variant) and IDR 548,800 (for the Elite variant), the five-seater CX-5 is significantly more expensive than an equivalent CR-V. The most expensive 1.5-litre turbocharged CR-V Prestige is priced at IDR 506,000,000.

The cheaper Honda comes with a 5+2 seater cabin, which we don’t get in Malaysia, but without Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS) features that Honda refers to as Honda Sensing, which we do get in Malaysia, and is also offered in the Indonesian market CX-5.

The Indonesian market CX-5 gets the full suite of Mazda’s i-ActiveSense safety features - Mazda’s equivalent to Honda Sensing. In fact, the Mazda offers a bit more features in its i-ActiveSense than Honda’s Sensing. On top of the usual autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist, the Mazda adds Adaptive LED headlamps, Adaptive Front Lighting System and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Its autonomous emergency braking feature also works when the car is in Reverse gear, preventing collisions due to accidental reversing.

The CX-5 also comes with a lot of premium features including a 10-speaker Bose audio system, heads-up display (Mazda calls it Active Driving Display) and an electric tailgate.

Like all recent Mazda models, the all-new CX-5 also comes with G-Vectoring Control (GVC), which in simple terms, improves ride comfort for passengers when the car is being driven into a corner. It does so by performing very minute but precise adjustments to the engine’s torque to counter-balance any G-forces experienced.

Closer to home, Bermaz Motor is expected to launch the all-new CX-5 sometime after September. Unlike the imported from Japan CX-5 model for Indonesia, ours will be locally-assembled in Kulim, Kedah, so prices should be a bit more competitive.
