2016 Toyota Sienta Officially Launched in Malaysia – From RM92,900

There’s not much that is not yet known about Toyota’s all-new MPV, the Sienta. Much like the Perodua Bezza which received a salvo a social media coverage prior to the official launch, the first introduction of Toyota’s junior seven-seater vehicle locally happened at the recent MyAutoFest 2016.

The Toyota Sienta slots in just above the entry-level people carrier - Toyota Avanza, and just below the soon-to-be-replaced Toyota Innova. It also sets itself apart due to the inclusion of sliding rear doors - which is a premium feature for a car of its segment.

The Toyota Sienta is produced and fully-imported (CBU) from Toyota's Karawang Barat manufacturing plant in Indonesia.

Just a day after the official launch in Thailand, UMW Toyota Motor today introduces the all-new Sienta in two trim levels at the following prices (on-the-road with insurance):

  • Toyota Sienta 1.5G – RM92,900
  • Toyota Sienta 1.5V – RM99,900

The Toyota Sienta represents a new generation of trendy MPVs that along with Toyota’s heavyweights, the Vellfire and Alphard, was opened for booking from early June. If perhaps, you’re wondering where you might have seen a similar formula before, Honda actually marketed the rather talented but expensive Honda Freed a few years back.

The Toyota Sienta is powered a 1.5-litre 2NR-FE Dual VVT-i engine mated to a CVT-type automatic transmission driving the front wheels. The powerplant outputs 107PS and 140Nm, albeit transverse mounted within the engine bay versus the longitudinal setup in the Toyota Avanza.

The CVT transmission does not have an oil cooler, but Toyota says it is durable enough in our Malaysian driving conditions, which is characterised by sustained high speeds in hot and humid weather.

It's also the similar powertrain that will be used in the forthcoming new Toyota Vios, which will be introduced later this year. As you expected, the Sienta is based on the Vios's platform, but with significant changes. Howeve the similarities between the two stops at the engine bay and bulkhead. Beyond the dashboard area, the rear-half of the Sienta is bespoke.

Toyota says the Sienta is targetted to have an ASEAN NCAP score of five stars, and is equipped with electronic stability control, or as Toyota calls it - VSC. Currently, the vehicle is only available with three airbags, but the company confirms that seven airbags is possible, but will add to the cost of the vehicle.

The Toyota Sienta 1.5G gets the ball rolling with the following features:

  • Automatic halogen projector headlamps
  • LED daytime running lights
  • LED tail lights
  • Rear fog lights
  • Power sliding rear passenger door – left side only
  • 185/60 R15 tyres, alloy rims
  • Rear air-con vents
